What’s Tom Cruise’s Habits to Longevity? - Staying Young Isn’t Impossible

Tom Cruise is the go-to guy when you think of crazy film stunts. 8 years ago he was hanging off of a plane, 5 years ago he was leaping from ledges and planes and now he’s doing crazy motorcycle stunts. How does the man do these death defying feats at the age of 61?

We put together his habits to his youthfulness so you can adopt them too.

  • 1. Make Sports a Lifestyle

  • One of the most amazing things about Tom Cruise is that he doesn’t show his age. His body not only looks like a young man but he moves like one too.

In an interview with men’s health, Cruise went into his training regimen. ‘Sea-kayaking, caving... fencing, treadmill, weights... rock-climbing, hiking... I jog... I do so many different activities.’

While most of us spend an hour in the gym and call it a day, Cruise is doing various activities. He’s challenging his body from many different angles so no muscle group is lagging behind.

This also keeps Cruise mobile, because a traditional gym routine conditions the muscles to one specific movement pattern. Pursuing different activities puts our body through a variety of angles and positions that promotes mobility and flexibility. This helps Cruise with his signature sprint you see him doing in literally every action movie he’s been in for the past 2 decades.

If you want Tom’s longevity when it comes to fitness, mix your daily workout routines with a sport. We recommend picking an activity that’s fun because you’ll find it easier to stick to it and it won’t feel like a chore. Some good examples are kick boxing, bouldering, and swimming.

  • 2. Strong mindset = stronger body
  • The second biggest factor that allows him to do nerve wracking stunts is his insane work ethic. Cruise never jumps into a stunt right away but he takes his time and builds up to it. Cruise is known for his perfectionist mindset and he takes the time to get it right.
  • During the filming of MI: Fallout, Cruise broke his ankle while leaping from a building.

“I knew instantly my ankle was broken and I really didn’t want to do it again so just got up and carried on with the take.”

This is the mentality that has kept him in the action genre for so long.

If you want to work on your mentality, there’s a very solid mental technique that the navy seal corps also uses. It’s called breaking the elephant. Anytime you’re overwhelmed with a big problem, try breaking it into subtasks. As small as you can and then tackle those tasks one by one.

  • 3. Eat like your ancestors
  • Tom Cruise has also revealed his diet. Cruise prefers to grill everything and stay away from carbs. He also maintains a very low calorie diet. Grilling is one of the healthiest ways to cook your food, whether meat or vegetables so all this checks out.
  • Avoiding carbs is also a great strategy but it’s hard to maintain. No carbs means no cake, no pasta, no rice, no potatoes and no bread. It’s tough but that’s how cruise remains lean and agile.
  • This is a change you could make in your life as well. Grilling uses minimal oil and doesn’t introduce any harmful fats or chemicals to your food. It’s a cooking technique that’s been around since humanity discovered fire and will probably still be around in the next thousand years.

These (probably) won’t turn you into a box office stuntman overnight. But they will keep you looking young, well into your 50s…and hopefully 60s.
